Microalgae are a natural resource of a large variety of molecules with industrial applications (lipids, carbohydrates, secondary metabolites, etc…). In order to exploit this potential, the elucidation of the whole microalgal metabolism regulation is a key prerequisite.

The research carried out at PAR-Lab aims at understanding the regulation of algae metabolism on a molecular basis how. Physiological, biochemical, transcriptomic and metabolomic approaches are run to identify the mechanisms of biomass and lipid production in selected species. This task is also facilitated by the experience gained by PAR-Lab in sequencing the Nannochloropsis gaditana genome.

The information obtained is then exploited for genetic modification so as to generate new and more productive strains in terms of fuels as well as chemicals or enzymes.
