Modelling of microalgae growth for design and optimization

Mathematical modelling is an invaluable tool to describe and predict microalgae growth dynamics in a quantitative way. First principles mathematical models that convey state-of-the-art scientific knowledge allows representing the key mechanisms of photosynthetic and metabolic phenomena and can be utilized to simulate and optimize microalgae growth in industrial culture systems.

The research carried out at PAR-Lab aims at building new reliable models in a systematic way through suitably designed experiments (mostly based on advanced exploitation Pulse Amplitude Modulation and Joliot type spectroscopy techniques), which aim at characterising specific phenomena. Such models can effectively support design, scale-up and control on industrial equipment and process operation.
